Storms, hail, very heavy rainfall … Five departments of Occitania on orange vigilance from this Tuesday

After a day on Monday covered by sunshine over most of France and some unstable rain, thunderstorms should be added to the weather forecast for this Tuesday, August 16. Five departments are in orange vigilance, all the rest of metropolitan France is in yellow. While the sun has rather shone on a major part of France, despite the appearance of scattered rain on Monday August 15, the weather should start to deteriorate in France on Tuesday August 16. New wave of rain and thunderstorms Indeed, a new wave of rain and thunderstorms will appear in mainland France. In anticipation of this degradation, Météo France places five departments of Occitania (Gard, Hérault, Aude, Aveyron and Tarn) in orange vigilance this Tuesday from 4 p.m. and at least until the next morning. The phenomenon could be intense, forecasters anticipate: “A stormy degradation will take place in the south-west of the country during the morning. The storms will become more violent during the afternoon in the south of the Massif- central (Tarn and Aveyron) as well as on the Aude. These storms will be accompanied by strong electrical activity, heavy hailstorms and heavy accumulations of precipitation”, notes Météo France. “Hail, gusts and high rainfall intensity” Locally, the phenomena could be particularly violent. This is particularly the case in Gard and Hérault, where damage is expected at the end of the day. “In Languedoc, at the end of the afternoon, the storms will spread towards Hérault and Gard. The storms will be accompanied by violent phenomena, very strong gusts, hail and marked electrical activity. Eddy phenomena, waterspouts or even tornadoes could also occur”. For its part, Météo Languedoc confirms the forecasts of Météo France. Regarding the evolution of the phenomenon, a lull should be felt this Wednesday morning, with a new stormy wave in the afternoon, “which will bring a new risk of very rainy thunderstorms. The accumulations could reach 50/100 mm over large areas in less than 24 hours, locally more than 150/180 mm”. “This episode is not exceptional but has the potential for torrential hourly water slides. Monitoring is required!”, underline the forecasters.
