As reported by WMBF News, on the fateful Wednesday, a sixty-three-year-old woman was sunbathing on a beach in South Carolina when a sudden wind picked up, knocking the umbrella off the sand and causing the woman a serious chest injury. After being transported to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries despite rapid medical intervention. Tammy is remembered on social media and at the local bar Scotty’s Beach Bar, which she liked to visit, as a loving and kind person and it was devastating news for the whole local community. According to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened shortly after lunch. Witnesses to the accident saw a flying umbrella carried by the wind and alerted Tammy, but it was too late. In the years 2010-2018 alone, they recorded approximately 3,000 cases of beach umbrella injuries. According to a scientific journal on safety research, the most common injuries are lacerations, bruises, abrasions, but often also injuries to internal organs, with head and neck injuries accounting for the largest share. Already in 2016, when there was also a fatal injury, Virginia state senators tried to alert the safety agency to review the rules for using an umbrella on the beach and also led a safety campaign.
