Images of the fire from the town of Barniedo. Residents of the towns of Boca de Huergano criticize the lack of means working on the fireThe night has not been easy for the residents of Barniedo, Los Espejos and Villafrea de la Reina in the Boca de Huérgano City Hall. Throughout the night they have seen how the flames approached their homes since the fire advances, leaving only a hillside from the towns. Late yesterday afternoon, the Junta de Castilla y León declared alert level 2 before the possibility of evicting the localities, a fact that in the end did not happen due to the arrival of the media from the Emergency Military Unit, UME that the neighbors eagerly awaited. Lack of means Although the regional government assures that six helicopters, five helicopter crews, two reinforcement brigades, three amphibious planes and a coordination plane from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge are working to extinguish the fire, the neighbors criticize the lack media. “The air resources do not arrive until 11 in the morning and leave at 8 in the afternoon,” they say. They recognize that the current moment, of drought and with a large number of active fires, keeps the media overwhelmed. “There is a lack of foresight that someone is guilty of,” they stress. Complications on the ground The Boca de Huérgano fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and has spread into two sources, of which the one advancing towards the aforementioned towns is now more virulent. The neighbors recognize the complicity of the terrain where the orography limits the extinction work. “But it is very difficult to understand how it has progressed from where it started to here,” they say. “There is a lot of rock and scrub” they detail, which is why the Board ensures that it uses human means for its extinction. The neighbors emphasize that the mountain has been abandoned for years, despite being a Regional Park. “How is this level of environmental protection going to be sustained if it is worthless, if it is burned?” they wonder as they feel abandoned by the virulence of the flames. “They let us burn” is the common feeling of the neighbors who anxiously hope not to be consumed by flames.
