The Biden administration will announce that a third dose of Covid vaccine is needed for virtually all Americans to counter weakened immunity and the Delta variant. According to sources cited by the Washington Post, federal health authorities believe that a booster is needed eight months after full vaccination. The official announcement should arrive within this week – according to some as early as tomorrow – and the start of vaccinations with the third dose will not begin before the middle, if not the end of September, after the expected authorization by the Food and Drug Administration. The conclusion on the need for the recall was reached after an intense discussion between the heads of the administration’s anti-Covid team, which analyzed data from the US and other countries on the effectiveness of a third dose. The expected announcement therefore constitutes a change of position with respect to the statements made in recent weeks regarding the fact that it was still too early to establish the need for the recall. Already last week Anthony Fauci had hinted at the change of position by saying that “probably” everyone will need a booster of the anti Covid vaccine. “I think Delta has changed everything,” said one of the sources cited by the Post, explaining the concern over data that would show a decrease in the effectiveness of the vaccine. According to these data, one million Americans have already received a third dose, although there has not yet been official authorization.
