A London hospital on Saturday disconnected 12-year-old Archie Battersbee from artificial ventilation, who had been in a comatose state since April due to brain damage. It came after his parents lost a lengthy legal battle in which they tried to secure him further life support. The boy died about two hours after being disconnected. Referring to the statement of Archie’s family, AFP and Reuters inform about it.
“I’m the proudest mum in the world, such a beautiful boy, and he fought until the very end,” Archie’s mother told reporters outside a London hospital on Saturday.
Back in June, the British court sided with the doctors from London’s Royal Hospital, who treated the boy and claimed that he was brain dead. The verdict allowed him to be disconnected from the devices, but the parents appealed.
But they did not succeed with the appeal at the British Supreme Court and finally not even at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) based in Strasbourg, which announced on Wednesday that it would not interfere in the case.
In the end, the parents did not manage to convince the court to allow them to transport Archie to the hospice, reports Reuters.
The doctors who treated the boy in the aforementioned London hospital claimed that connecting him to the devices was not in the boy’s best interest, and at the same time that transferring him to a hospice would worsen his condition even more.
The boy was found unconscious by his mother Hollie Dance at their family home in Essex on April 7. Since then he has not recovered.
Dance believes her son got into this condition after apparently taking part in one of the risky internet challenges popular among some teenagers, where the goal is to last as long as possible suffocating.
