BRATISLAVA. Slovak under-18 hockey players will say goodbye to the prestigious Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament with a fight for fifth place. Tibor Tartaľ’s wards will meet peers from the USA. Even before the last match in group A, it was clear that the Slovaks would not defend the fantastic silver medal from last year. They played the meeting with Switzerland the very next day after losing to Canada. “It was a very difficult match, we played twice in 20 hours. You could see it in the first period before we got into the game. It is very important that we managed it. The Swiss had a day off, we were emotionally drained in the match against the Canadians,” said Tibor Tartaľ, the coach of the Slovakian 18 team for SZĽH. Canada and Sweden from the Slovak group advanced to the semi-finals. Javorové listy went through the group stage without hesitation and their only goal was scored by Slovakian striker Peter Cisár. The Czech Republic sensationally won the second group ahead of Finland. Retribution for a heavy loss Slovak hockey players met the Americans in a preparatory match before the tournament, in which they lost heavily 0:8. The players believe that they played well in the tournament and will return the loss to the opponent. “I think we have gained some experience in these three matches and I believe that we will give our best performance against the Americans. We will fight,” revealed double scorer Adam Cedzo in the match against Switzerland.
