The next days, August 11, 12 and 13, will be the best days to see the long-awaited Perseid meteor shower and many are already looking for the ideal place to witness it. The Perseids are visible from the entire northern hemisphere in midsummer and the speed of their meteors can reach 50 kilometers per second. Their activity rate can reach 200 shooting stars per hour and they can be seen with the naked eye, although this year the light pollution caused by the full moon, added to that produced by the Human Being, will make it somewhat more difficult to appreciate. . Light pollution is precisely the concern of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), which will offer a joint broadcast with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) from Roque de Los Muchachos (La Palma) and Pico do Arieiro (Madeira, Portugal) through the sky-live.tv channel. The objective of the live broadcast is to make the population aware of this pollution phenomenon from one of the clearest skies in the world: that of Macaronesia. Light pollution caused by man affects 23% of the continental surface. Classic to see them on Teide Despite the efforts of IAC and SPEA to broadcast the shower of stars live, there are those who prefer to take advantage of the clarity of the Canarian skies to see it with their own eyes. In Tenerife, it is a classic to climb Mount Teide to witness the so-called Tears of San Lorenzo. But this year could be the last in which I know of this scene. Just like when it snows, the Teide National Park collapses when astronomical phenomena like this one occur. It is, along with many others, one of the reasons why the proposal for the Regulatory Plan for Use and Management (PRUG) of this national park proposes prohibiting the parking of vehicles inside it. Controversy with the business fabric and political parties The measures contemplated in the PRUG draft have caused such a stir in society, parties and the business fabric of Tenerife that, after having extended the period of public exposure until July 22, the Government of the Canary Islands has also been forced to extend the deadline for allegations until September 15. Since the initial announcement of this new process, on May 23, it is the fourth date defined as “final” in view of the numerous complaints from parties, administrations and businessmen. Ashotel, the hotel management association of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, presented its allegations a week ago, declaring that the plan “suffers from the participation of interested organizations and groups, including Ashotel itself”, and urged the Government of the Canary Islands to rework it with “greater participation and based on technical studies, not so much on opinions”. In a harder line, last Sunday the 28th the Popular Party of Tenerife presented its own, assuring that it is “a fully-fledged null document”, and insisting to the regional Executive “that it cease its efforts to continue with the process processing of this document, which must necessarily be annulled, and initiate another for which a correct participatory process is guaranteed, which arises from the will for dialogue and social debate. It also calls for the immediate withdrawal of the Canarian Coalition plan, which on July 23 demanded greater participation in its preparation. Shuttle buses The PRUG is in the allegations phase and José Antonio Valbuena, Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, guaranteed last week that there would be no plan without a social agreement. The circulation of vehicles within the national park is not in danger, but parking within its limits remains in the air until the final draft is presented. Although Valbuena’s approach is to build three bus shuttles at the gates of the park to park the cars and continue the journey by public transport, it will not be until the Perseids of 2023 that it will be known if any alternative is offered to be able to see them inside the national park .
