Fernando Alonso has blown up the Alpine team. After a year and a half waiting for them to fulfill their promises, fed up with disrespect and, above all, affection, the Spaniard broke the agreement he had with them to renew and, after negotiating behind his back for months, signed with Aston Martin . Alonso’s decision has revealed much more than the merely sporting that concerns him. Otmar Szafnauer, the main culprit (not the only one) of this divorce, has been totally portrayed by a disastrous management of what happened. Not only for lying when he said that the pilot was on a yacht in the Greek islands, but also for how Oscar Piastri, who was his big bet, has given him another stab: he has not signed with them and is waiting for the lawyers to resolve the situation so that McLaren’s call allows him to change Enstone for Woking. All this week, with all the actors involved, Alpine is the one that, by far, has come out as the main loser. Alonso laughs in Alpine’s faceThe tumultuous Tuesday in which Alpine announced Piastri’s promotion for the Australian to deny it had Alonso as a spectator in the luxury distance. Exactly at the same time that the Alpine tester broke the internet denying that he was going to run with the French team, Alonso shared in his stories a video from the San Francisco Park in Oviedo, a kind of ‘proof of life’ in the which made it very clear that, despite what Szafnauer said, he was not on a yacht.💥ALONSO’s RESPONSE to SZAFNAUER 💥👀The Spanish pilot is in OVIEDO and NOT on a BOAT in the GREEK ISLANDS, as the team leader pointed out of ALPINE. pic.twitter.com/oqVgzHj6Qa— El Chiringuito TV (@elchiringuitotv) August 2, 2022 It is quite an example of what Alonso is going to do this year. The Spanish driver has guaranteed a seat for 2023 and it will not be the one in blue and pink that has disappointed him so much, not only because the car is not what was promised, but because there is no sign of improving. Alonso is going to become an enemy at home, uncomfortable for his team and he will only race for himself. Unlike two boyfriends who separate for vacations but predict an affectionate reunion, when the pilot and his bosses meet again in Belgium, it will not be kind at all. Alpine, forced to swallow Alonso’s toadThat Alonso is not going to wear the ‘black leg’ pieces, no one doubts. In case a suspension, a new wing or a new ‘trick’ works, he will be in Esteban Ocon’s car. The French driver won’t have to hold back at all, although he didn’t either until now, since the Spaniard will only be his partner for the next 10 races: from then on, Alonso will be just another rival. Possibly the one he most wants to overcome. Until that time comes, Alpine have no choice but to hang in there and help the Spanish rider, if they know what is good for them. They are in the middle of a fight with McLaren to be the fourth team in the Constructors’ World Championship, with the subsequent difference in economic income that they have to finish the year in that position or further back. Without Alonso’s points, it will be much more difficult, so they won’t be able to leave him without developments or without giving him a minimum of resources that will allow him to fight for the upper-middle area of the grid. Szafnauer will have to think very hard if it suits him to further anger an Alonso who in just four days has made him little more than a ridiculous ‘meme’, even above a Ferrari whose disaster in Hungary has been totally overshadowed by the implosion Alpine. There are ten Grands Prix left for the 2022 season to end and, given what he has achieved, there are serious doubts that the Anglo-French team boss will act as he should. Right now there is a question on the table: how will Szafnauer manage to finish blowing up Alonso’s relationship with Alpine? Video analysis: Can Alonso win with Aston Martin?
