Images of the facts circulated widely on social networks, to the point that the police headquarters had to publicly return to the case on social networks. On the night of Sunday 15 to Monday 16 August, in Stains (Seine-Saint-Denis) two police officers shot dead two people who refused to be checked in their vehicle. According to our information, the driver of the vehicle received 6 bullets. He was taken to hospital with a life-threatening prognosis. His passenger, who was lying in the back seat, is also in critical condition.

The Bobigny prosecutor’s office indicated that the IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police) was seized of the investigation, opened for “refusal to comply” and “attempted homicide on a person holding public authority”. The judicial police of Seine-Saint-Denis were jointly seized.

According to our information, two of the three police officers from the Bac (Anti-Crime Brigade) present at the time of the facts were placed in police custody at 4 p.m. on Monday for “attempted murder” in the premises of the IGPN. Police custody that can last up to 48 hours. The third official, also from the Bac, is heard as a simple witness. He did not use his firearm during the intervention.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the facts occurred around 1:30 am. A Bac crew attempted to control a vehicle occupied by a man and a passenger, boulevard Maxime Gorki, in Stains. The car first came to a stop near the police, before reversing to try to escape control. One of the officials then tried to enter the passenger compartment of the vehicle to stop it, but it would have driven forward. An amateur video, broadcast and widely shared on social networks, shows the two agents then repeatedly firing at the car, with their service weapon.

Eight shots were reportedly fired in total: five by one police officer, three by another. So far, the three police officers have provided the same version: their fear of being run over and dragged by the driver. According to them, they were in self-defense, and shooting the tires or the engine would have been pointless. The investigation revealed that the driver was unarmed.
