Coronavirus: Are unvaccinated people more at risk of severe cases? The revelations of the DREES study – Senenews

The effectiveness of vaccination in reducing severe forms of Covid-19 is confirmed by hospital data.

How many people are vaccinated against Covid-19 among hospital admissions? The answer to this question has long been made impossible by the partitioning of databases. Since the end of July, this information has been published in open access by the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees). The organization cross-referenced the SI-VIC database, which lists people hospitalized in connection with Covid-19, with the Vacsi databases, which tracks vaccinations, and Sidep for virological tests.

Difficult to interpret the raw data, since the progress of the vaccination campaign increases every day the proportion of people who have completed their vaccination schedule: they were 14% on June 1, against 44% on August 1. At the same time, the share of unvaccinated decreases from 64% of the population to 42%. Over time, the raw numbers will therefore reflect an increase in the number of people vaccinated among hospital admissions, as they will represent a growing share of the total population. On the other hand, by reporting the number of hospitalizations or admissions in critical care for Covid-19 to the whole of the vaccinated or unvaccinated population, it is possible to assess the effect of vaccination. And he’s an adult.

These two stacked bar charts represent the proportion of people fully vaccinated among new hospitalized patients and critical care admissions since the end of May 2021, and only among cases confirmed by a positive PCR test. The curves indicate the weekly average.

In order to be able to compare the completely vaccinated populations and those who did not even have a first dose, we reported for each day the two groups to the whole of their group (vaccinated and unvaccinated therefore), before calculating a rate. for 10 million inhabitants.

In doing so, as the size of the two groups changes according to the new vaccinations, the data remain comparable between them over time.

New hospitalizations
Among people who have been fully vaccinated,
14.3 per 10 million were hospitalized each day on average
the week of July 26 to August 1 against 82.7 in non-vaccinated (i.e. × 6)

Critical care entry
Among people who have been fully vaccinated,
2.8 per 10 million were admitted to critical care each day on average
between July 26 and August 1 compared to 25 in the non-vaccinated (i.e. × 9).
