The Creators of “South Park” to Acquire Casa Bonita – The HuffPost

UNUSUAL – “And there will even be two guys in gorilla costumes!” Real local celebrities in Colorado, where they are from and where they take place their cult series “South Park”, Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently celebrated the satirical cartoon’s 24th anniversary.

And for the occasion, the Democratic governor of this state in the western United States, Jared Polis, offered to interview them live on social networks. An interview during which the two creators of “South Park” announced a news that should delight more than a fan of the series: they are about to buy the restaurant “Casa Bonita”, located in Lakewood, a suburb of Denver, the main city of Colorado.

This restaurant is indeed well known to fans of the cartoon since November 2003 and the broadcast of an episode that takes place there.

Relatively faithfully representing the places (a huge Mexican-inspired restaurant where there is in particular a high waterfall from which divers, mariachi groups, actors disguised as gorillas who pass from table to table jump …), The episode features Eric Cartman and his all-more Machiavellian attempts to get invited to a birthday party in this dream location for a little boy.

An episode passed down to posterity and which has enabled the restaurant to become an emblematic place in the region. Thus, in 2018, the local American football team, the Denver Broncos, even organized ceremonies there to welcome their new players.

But with the epidemic of covid-19, the restaurant had to close its doors at the end of 2020, before declaring bankruptcy last spring. Since then, individual initiatives had broken through to try to save the place, pushed by fans of the series, raising for example tens of thousands of dollars through crowdfunding.

But after signing a colossal contract with Paramount to produce new seasons of “South Park” and especially 14 films for the studio’s streaming platform, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are surely the most likely to relaunch the famous “Casa Bonita”. In the interview with Governor Polis, they also undertake to improve the place, with why not “two guys in gorilla costumes” (instead of just one at the moment).

Founded in Oklahoma in the 1960s, the “Casa Bonita” brand quickly became a chain known in several American states for its gigantic entertainment and its 26-meter-high Mexican “bell tower” in every restaurant. But the one in Lakewood was until the pandemic the last one still open. And if the buyout process initiated by the two artists is completed, it will remain so for a while, to the delight of Colorado residents and fans.
