The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said three ads by SofiaDate, which appeared online in May with models dressed in underwear and in sexy poses, linked women’s vulnerability to their sexual appeal, the Daily Mail reports. At that time, the British government launched the Homes for Ukraine support program, under which the British can accommodate refugees from Ukraine in their homes. Advertisements related to it were promoted by local newspapers. In one of them, a blonde in a tight yellow dress was photographed on a balcony, which the publisher Newsquest declared to be a bit provocative and sexy, but it has nothing to do with women fleeing war. However, after consideration, the news portal decided to remove the ads because they appeared to be in violation of their policy of rejecting ads for prostitution and human trafficking. Further investigation revealed that some men are using the refugee program to contact single and vulnerable women fleeing war. Three complaints have already been made to the ASA, alleging that the ads were inappropriate and offensive in the context of the war in Ukraine. The first ad appeared on the Dorset Echo website and stated: “You can meet thousands of single Ukrainian women. Forget loneliness. Be happy.” The second and third ads, both shown on the website of Scottish newspaper The National, featured images of women in provocative poses and read: “Connecting single men from around the world with their ideal partners.” The National and Newsquest Media Group, trading as the Dorset Echo, said the adverts were intended only as dating adverts, although from a male perspective they may have come across as slightly sexist. According to them, the ads do not refer to the war in Ukraine, do not contain any partisan symbols, and are also not offensive to Ukrainian women or the Ukrainian people in general. In support of the complaints, the ASA said the women in the ads were portrayed in a way that was at least partly designed to irritate readers. Abuse and domestic violence Meanwhile, it emerged in May that men with records of domestic abuse or violence were allegedly messaging single Ukrainian women in their 20s and 30s in specially created Facebook groups. Some refugees have even become homeless after relationships with hosts are severed or housing is found to have not been properly vetted.
