Lawyer weighs in on Trump’s legal future 2:14 (CNN) — Matthew Pottinger, who served on former President Donald Trump’s National Security Council before resigning immediately after January 6, 2021, will testify publicly at the hearing in prime-time Thursday by the House select committee investigating the assault on the US Capitol, according to multiple sources familiar with the plans. Pottinger is scheduled to appear alongside former Trump White House aide Sarah Matthews. CNN previously reported that Matthews, who served as Trump’s White House deputy press secretary until her resignation shortly after Jan. 6, 2021, was expected to testify publicly. When she resigned, Matthews said that she was honored to have served in the Trump administration, but that she was “deeply disturbed” by what she saw. Pottinger, Trump’s deputy national security adviser, resigned in response to the reaction from the former president in the face of his supporters breaching the US Capitol, a person close to Pottinger at the time of his resignation confirmed to CNN. He told people that he had very little to consider, the person said at the time. A commission spokesman declined to comment. A spokesman for Pottinger did not respond to a CNN request for comment. The public has now heard live testimony from more than a dozen witnesses and seen clips of recorded statements from more than 40 people, including members of the Trump family, former administration officials, Republican officials from key election states and members of the president’s former legal team. Thursday’s hearing will be the panel’s second prime-time session, and committee members have said they will examine Trump’s 187-minute inaction as unrest unfolded at the U.S. Capitol. Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, who will lead Thursday’s hearing with Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, told CNN the commission “will be looking almost minute by minute” at the then president’s actions. “He wasn’t doing anything to stop the rioting,” Luria told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.” CNN’s Jamie Gangel contributed to this report.
