Fire in La Teste-de-Buch: the Arcachon Basin zoo evacuated

(©Actu.fr Bordeaux) The smoke from the fire that devastated the user forest of La Teste-de-Buch (Gironde) is now close to the Arcachon Basin zoo – located on the territory of the municipality of La Teste -de-Buch- and will get even closer, this Monday, July 18 in the afternoon. For this reason, the preventive evacuation of the zoo was decided by the Sub-prefect of Arcachon, Renan Léaustic, from the operational command post, this morning. The Pessac zoo will welcome the animals. To do this, the French Association of Zoological Parks has mobilized a real chain of solidarity from other zoos. “All the parks in the west are currently transporting vehicles and care teams to ensure the proper transport of the animals from Teste-de-Buch”, assures Cécile Erny, at 4 p.m. today. Ten veterinarians are also expected on site. The residents of the La Teste zoo should arrive at the end of the day in Pessac, where barnums will be installed in the shade. “According to the authorities, we are waiting for the cloud of smoke to pass. This is only a very temporary situation”. The zoo has been closed since July 15 because of the heat wave and the fire which reduced 4,200 hectares to ashes in La Teste-de-Buch. Firefighters have been fighting for six days against the fire which intensified on Sunday. Monday, the firefighters expect an “extremely complicated day due to the unfavorable weather”.
