A major earthquake shook Haiti this Saturday morning. It was 8:30 a.m. local time when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked the country, according to the US Center for Seismology. The powerful shock, whose epicenter is located in Saint-Louis-du-Sud, 160 km from Port-au-Prince, was felt throughout the country and several deaths are to be deplored, according to a first assessment given to AFP by the director of civil protection. “There are deaths, I confirm, but I do not yet have the precise balance”, said Jerry Chandler, adding that Prime Minister Ariel Henry was on his way to the national emergency operations center in Port-au-Prince.
A tsunami warning was then triggered by the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS), as the sea receded in Jérémie, a journalist on the spot said, supporting photos. The affected area appears to be the sparsely populated southwest of the island, according to the USGS. Material damage is also recorded in the towns of Jérémie and Les Cayes, according to witness images published on social networks.

TSUNAMI ALERT
The epicenter of the earthquake is located 12 km from Saint-Louis du Sud, in the southwest of the island, 160 km from the capital. According to the first images of witnesses posted on social networks, the cities of Jérémie and Cayes are the most affected.
“Panic in Les Cayes for fear of a tsunami, according to Jose Flecher, correspondent for Le Nouvelliste on the spot. Many people are leaving the city to take refuge in mountainous areas,” said Frantz Duval, editor-in-chief of the daily Le Nouvelliste, on Twitter. The tsunami alert triggered by the American Institute of Geophysics has still not been lifted.

Including a hotel,” indicates on Twitter Frantz Duval, the editor-in-chief of the daily Le Nouvelliste. A former senator would be found in the rubble of this establishment, reports the local newspaper La Diaspora. Religious buildings, schools and homes were damaged in the earthquake, according to residents of the affected area.
Shortly after the earthquake, the country’s mobile operator, Digicel Haiti, explained on Twitter that a network outage was affecting the country: “We will let you know when the Digicel network is up and running. If you can’t make calls yet, it’s because everyone is trying at the same time. Don’t panic, stay vigilant “. However, panic is felt within the population. While many residents of Les Cayes are trying to flee in the face of the threat of a tsunami, inmates at Jacmel prison have tried to escape, according to a journalist from Le Nouvelliste. Eleven years ago, on January 12, 2010, this Caribbean country was devastated by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake. This disaster killed more than 230,000 people and destroyed nearly 1.5 million homes.
