Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová appointed 27 new university professors on Wednesday. She handed over the appointment decrees to them in the Presidential Palace. During her speech to the newly appointed professors, she stated that Slovakia needs talented and qualified people not to leave the country. The president told the appointed professors that they had achieved great success in their academic careers. “Today you formally became part of the academic elite, which is a binding position. Not only your students, doctoral students and colleagues, but our entire society will expect a lot from you,” said the president. She pointed out that we live in times of revolutionary discoveries, technological progress, but also inspiring thoughts and stimulating creative actions. “We can experimentally confirm the existence of the Higgs boson, we penetrate into the secrets of the universe, and many activities can be performed by artificial intelligence instead of humans. However, we also live in times when we have to face increasingly urgent civilizational threats,” the head of state said. According to her, only an adequate level of education and professional qualification gives us a chance to pass such exams. She asked the professors not to consider their success as the end of their academic career, but as its new, even more significant beginning. “For the beginning of the stage in which you will hand over to society everything you have now. You, as top representatives of the academic community, have a fundamental influence on the formation of the entire academic environment, as well as on the educational level of society,” she said. At the same time, she described them as messengers who spread the voice of reason. She also pointed out that with education, scientific skills, creativity and experience, they can educate, cultivate and inspire our young college generation. “I expect that thanks to you, colleges and universities will be centers of excellence, but also of enlightenment, critical thinking, rationality, cultured discussion, tolerance and decency. Slovakia needs this more than ever before,” says the head of state. According to her, Slovakia also needs educated and qualified people not to leave it. “If we are to achieve this goal, we must ensure that as many gifted and talented young people as possible receive the best education in Slovakia. Even if they eventually complete it abroad, they should return to their native country and work here for its development,” she added. with the fact that we are not yet able to fulfill this goal.
