The Slovak hockey player’s top position in this year’s NHL draft was decided by a combination of skating, character and shooting instinct, but also by his independence, which he mastered brilliantly during his time in Finland. Montreal’s general manager admitted that the club’s representatives had interviews with the 18-year-old winger right at the scene of the draft. Kent Hughes was also interested in how Slafkovský took care of himself during his time at TPS Turku. “I asked him if he stayed in a hotel during the season in Finland. He said no. So I responded: ‘So one of your parents moved in with you?’ And again he said no. So I asked him: ‘ How did you cook?’ And he said, ‘On the stove,'” Hughes told nhl.com. We think that despite the fact that he’s still a kid, he has mindset that we’re looking for. He has the natural ability to do that.
