On the penultimate day of the first block and after the first mountain finish, another classic appetizer is prepared. The finish line of the stage will be hosted by the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne. After the initial 30 flat kilometers, the ascent into the heart of the Jura begins. In the first hour, we can again expect an interesting battle for escape. In the previous two days, tens of kilometers were taken from the peloton, and it may be similar at the beginning of the 8th stage. There is a speed premium at 46.9 km. It is questionable to what extent Wout van Aert, Michael Matthews, but also Peter Sagan will be active on it. Everyone can join the fight for the stage and every percentage of performance will be useful. The middle part of the stage offers 50 kilometers of three climbing premiums and a demanding profile, where it will be difficult to rest. Magnus Cort leads the hillclimb competition by one point ahead of overall leader Tadej Pogačar. The Danish cyclist will want to keep his points until the next day, and he will only need a triumph at the first premium of the day, for example. From the third climbing premium, it will constantly drop down to the final climb, where the cyclists will reach the shore of Lake Geneva. The finish will take place on an almost 5-kilometer climb of the 4th category. The initial two kilometers will not bring steep inclines, but after the rest section and the descent, the cyclists will encounter a 12 percent ramp and the most difficult kilometer of the entire climb. Subsequently, the slope will ease and the final 800 meters will be in more pleasant numbers (3.4% on average). After the first difficult finish and before Sunday’s mountain test, teams with favorites for the overall standings can leave enough room for escape. In that case, the field of possible stage winners will be wide open. The only team aiming to control the stage may be Australia’s BikeExchange, but it can be assumed that Michael Matthews will also be trying to break away on the day, and preferably with a teammate.
