Gb government, already started race for succession to Johnson

In the Conservative party, the race for Boris Johnson’s succession has begun, after the prime minister resigned as leader of the Tories following a flurry of resignation in his government. Tom Tugendhat, reports the BBC, is the latest MP to join the fray, along with Attorney General Suella Braveman and Brexiteer Steve Baker, who are also interested. For former Prime Minister John Major, it would be “unwise” for Johnson to stick around until the choice of his successor. The Labor Party threatened to try to oust the prime minister immediately with a no-confidence motion, which would only pass with the support of many Conservative MPs. In recent days, some 60 MPs have left government posts at all levels, which raises doubts about the government’s ability to function. Speaking to the new nominees yesterday, replacing the resigning ones, Johnson promised that he will not use his remaining time in Downing Street to effect “major changes of direction”. The timing for the Tory leadership race will be spelled out next week: the new prime minister is expected to be in office in September. But unofficially the race is already in full swing: Tugendhat launches his candidacy in the Daily Telegraph today, promising tax cuts and “new energy and ideas” for the government.
