Russia, Griner detained: US basketball star pleaded guilty

American basketball star Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug possession charges brought against him in a Russian court in a town near Moscow. Her lawyers at CNN confirmed this. The American basketball player, who also played in the Russian league, was arrested in February at a Moscow airport after Russian officials said they found cannabis oil in her luggage. His has been a diplomatic case from the beginning, with the United States deeming his detention “unfair” and demanding his immediate release. On Independence Day on July 4th, Griner sent a letter to the president American Joe Biden asking him to do “everything possible” to get her back home. “I am terrified – she wrote – of the possibility of staying forever” in a Russian prison. Last Friday there was a first court hearing during which the accusations were served.
