Afghanistan, Miccio (Emergency): “Situation out of control and getting worse by the hour”

“The situation is out of control and is getting worse by the hour. We expected it but we did not imagine such a rapid advance of the Taliban. After 20 years of war, the foundations for peace in the country have not been laid. Our 3 hospitals and our 40 clinics, except one, continue to operate and treat the war wounded. We are working at full capacity: there is no area that is not involved in the fighting “. Emergency president Rossella Miccio told Adnkronos, commenting on the situation in Afghanistan. “There are many – says the president of Emergency – the displaced people fleeing to Kabul, where they hope to find assistance and security, and to neighboring nations, such as Iran and Pakistan. Except the capital, the areas of Panjshir, Herat and Mazar-i- Sharif, 65% of the territory is controlled militarily and administratively by the Taliban. The police in some internal villages have fled without even fighting. The violence is at the highest level, there are bombings both by air and by land. In one of our clinics in Maidanshahr, near Kabul, activities have been suspended for four days because it is close to the front on the line of fire “. Miccio foresees “difficult weeks for everyone. The situation is very uncertain. We strongly hope to maintain safety in hospitals because they are one of the last remnants of salvation for the population. We are really doing our best”.
