Lemonade Joe, Jáchym, throw him in the machine!, “Marecka, give me the pen!” whether Adéla hasn’t had dinner yet – all legendary Czech comedies have a common denominator. He is the director Oldřich Lipský, the younger brother of the popular actor Lubomír Lipský. Oldřich Lipský was born on July 4, 1924 in Pelhřimov to the family of a well-known confectioner, but also a passionate amateur actor, Vilém Lipský. Thanks to the family tradition, all three siblings – Oldřich, brother Lubomír who was fourteen months older, and Dalibor, who was seven years younger – got to know the theater. Oldřich studied at the Pelhřim grammar school, which was closed by the Germans in 1941. Oldřich and Lubomír were involved as actors in the Dramatic Studio of Young People, which later changed its name to “Malá Komedie” for political reasons, and its members met secretly. After liberation, Oldřich Lipský moved to Prague and began to study philosophy and law, but the call of the theater and the silver screen was stronger. He became the director of the Theater of Satire, but he was more and more inclined towards film, where he worked his way through the professions of “clap” and assistant director to screenwriting and film directing. Photo gallery (4) Source: CT In 1947, tragedy struck the family when seventeen-year-old Dalibor was struck by lightning while swimming in the lake. The relationship between the brothers Lubomír and Oldřich strengthened even more. Oldřich Lipský’s first independent film was a comedy set in a circus arena called Cirkus bude! (1954). Already a year later, Lipský filmed another comedy Vzorný cinematograf Hašek Jaroslav, consisting of four stories by the author of the legendary Švejk. The film, thanks to its black and absurd humor and convincing acting performances, and thanks to Jan Werich in the role of narrator, clearly confirmed how close Lipský is to the comedy genre. Lipský achieved real audience success with his parody of western stories, Lemonade Joe, or the Horse Opera (1964). The film, shot according to Jiří Brdecek’s design, was screened in 50 countries around the world and won several awards, for example the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Three years later, Lipský created a unique film project with Vladimír Menšík in the lead role – the black comedy Happy End!, which was based on reverse projection, i.e. the film was shown backwards, from end to beginning. Another sci-fi comedy, I Killed Einstein, Gentlemen, followed in 1969. However, more successful was the film “Four murders are enough, dear” (1970), parodying American gangster films interspersed with comic drawings by the painter Kája Saudek. In 1971, the director filmed the crazy comedy Straw Hat and a year later the children’s film – again from a circus setting – Six Bears with Cibulka. Photo gallery (4) Source: CT A new source of inspiration for Oldřich Lipský was a meeting with Zdenek Svěrak and Ladislav Smoljak. Their collaboration resulted in the popular comedy Jáchyme, throw him in the machine! (1974) with Luďko Sobot in the main role. Equally popular was the film from the school desks “Marečka, podejte mi peno!” (1976), where Jiří Sovák played the role of a student at a mature age. In addition to the children’s musical film Let the Spirits Live, in the same year Oldřich Lipský filmed another legendary comedy Adéla has not dined yet, again based on Brděk’s original. Michal Dočolomanský, Miloš Kopecký and Rudolf Hrušínský proved themselves so well in the main roles that the director chose them for the next film The Secret of the Castle in the Carpathians (1981). Milan Lasica and Július Satinský played a pair of aliens in the comedy with sci-fi elements, Hearty Greetings from the Globe (1982). They were also present in the fairy tale Three Veterans (1983), although the main roles belonged to the three actors Rudolf Hrušínský, Petr Čepek and Josef Somr. Milan Lasica fondly recalled his collaboration with Oldřich Lipský, which he also expressed in a letter from August 1982: “Rarely does one meet a director who perfectly combines professionalism and experience with shy nobility and a quiet humor that does not impose itself at all and is ever present as an immutable certainty that can be relied upon at any time.” In 1986, Oldřich Lipský filmed the comedy Velká filmová loupež, but he died suddenly on October 19 while working on the film. The film was completed by Lipský’s director colleague Zdeněk Podskalský. The actor Lubomír Lipský wrote about his brother: “In short, Oldřich chose the path of comedy, and I think that on that path he still sings to himself the tune from the song from Three Veterans: ‘It is not necessary, it is not necessary that it be directly cheerful.
