Covid Australia, Canberra in lockdown after the discovery of a new infection

From today at 5 pm (9 am in Italy) Canberra is in lockdown, after having registered the first case of infection from Covid-19 in over a year. The approximately 400,000 inhabitants of the Australian federal capital and the surrounding territory will be able to leave their homes only for essential reasons. The decision was made due to the impossibility for the health authorities to trace the origin of the infection. The spread of the Delta variant has already forced Australian authorities to impose a lockdown on the country’s two main cities, Sydney and Melbourne. To date, less than a quarter of Australians are vaccinated. The new restrictions led to a series of anti-lockdown protests. In Sydney, the authorities have asked for the use of the army to help police patrol the streets and enforce contagion containment measures.
