Already on the opening straight there was a collision of several cars, for which George Russell, Esteban Ocon, Júki Cunoda, Alex Albon, but especially Chou Kuan-yüm paid the price. After the collision, his single-seater spun in the air and flew through the tire barrier into the vicinity of the spectators. The race was stopped immediately after the incident and did not restart even after 45 minutes. The marshals spent more than 15 minutes freeing Chou from the single seat. He was then carried on a stretcher to an ambulance, which took him to a medical center. According to the first information, he was conscious and without serious injuries. The Mercedes driver also paid for the collision, but immediately after it he jumped out of the car and ran towards Chou. It was also saved from more serious consequences by the halo system, or “halo” that protects the space above the rider’s head. Russell called the situation “one of the scariest accidents he’s ever seen.” The Briton had ambitions to continue racing. However, his Mercedes had to be loaded onto a truck and taken to the pit lane, so the FIA did not allow him to continue according to the rules. This ended Russell’s season-long streak of top-five finishes.
