Among the last countries to have for the first time a woman as President of their Parliament or of one of its Chambers are Andorra, Belarus, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo in 2019, Azerbaijan and Kiribati in 2020. The French Simone Veil became in 1979 the first woman elected to the presidency of the European Parliament based in Strasbourg. Overall, on January 1, 2022, women represented approximately 22% of the presidents of parliament, against 20.9% a year ago, according to data compiled by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the world organization of parliaments of sovereign States, based in Geneva.
