The probability that the Mediterranean countries will be hit by a tsunami over the next 30 years is almost 100%. This is mainly due to rising ocean levels. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said this on Thursday, which also called on coastal cities to take the necessary security measures, writes The Guardian. UNESCO said the tsunami could hit some coastal cities in the Mediterranean, such as Marseille in France, Istanbul in Turkey and Alexandria in Egypt. Although tsunamis are most common in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and countries there are aware of the dangers they face, this may not be the case in other coastal locations. In addition to Marseille, Istanbul and Alexandria, the Mediterranean resorts of Cannes and Chipiona in Spain are among the Mediterranean areas at greatest risk of torrential waves. Together with 40 other sites in 21 countries around the world, these cities have joined a special UNESCO program aimed at preparing local authorities and coastal residents for potential tsunamis. UNESCO launched the program ahead of next week’s UN Conference on the Oceans in Lisbon. The areas included in the program will have to draw up a plan by 2030 to reduce the potential risk of torrential waves, identify endangered sites and publish useful information and maps. UNESCO has also set up 12 tsunami warning centers, five of which are in the Mediterranean. UNESCO tsunami expert Bernardo Aliaga said that residents of the affected areas will have access to evacuation plans and an early warning system, which will be implemented through sirens or alerts in the WhatsApp application.
