The European Council has decided to guarantee Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate countries for EU membership, a “historic moment” for the Union. President Charles Michel announced it via social media, underlining that this is a “crucial step on the path towards the EU”. As proposed by the Commission, Georgia is granted a “European perspective”, but the EU is “ready to grant it the status of candidate country” once the required reforms are made. The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen compliments the presidents of the three countries, who “are part of the European family. And the historic decision taken today by the leaders confirms this”. “Grateful to Charles Michel and Von der Leyen and the EU leaders for their support. The future of Ukraine lies within the EU.” The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky comments in a tweet on the positive vote of the EU Council for the status of candidate for the EU of Ukraine.
