The colonel and former carrier of Putin’s nuclear briefcase Vadim Zimin (53) were found in his apartment on Monday with a serious gunshot wound to the head, according to the British portal Mirror. According to the Russian media, Zimin, who was prosecuted for allegedly taking bribes under house arrest, was supposed to try to commit suicide. His brother found him in the apartment, the man is now in critical condition in the hospital. Vadim Zimin was a former colonel in the Russian Federal Administration for Protection (FSO). During his tenure, he was in charge of the President’s nuclear briefcase. He served in this position during the reign of former Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The shot was found in the kitchen of an apartment in Krasnogorsk by his brother, who according to some reports was already in the apartment during the incident, according to the British Mirror. Zimin, with a head injury, was lying in a pool of blood and there was supposed to be a gun nearby, according to the portal. The shooting took place at a time when Zimin was being prosecuted for allegedly accepting a bribe at the time he took over the management of the Central Customs Office. He was therefore under house arrest for criminal prosecution. He denied the mistake. According to the Russian daily Moskovsky Komsomolets, Zimin tried to commit suicide due to a bad social situation caused by job loss. His wife, who works as a nurse, was reportedly not at home at the time of the incident. She treated wounded Russian soldiers at the hospital.
