(CNN) – If the “pastry elf” hadn’t spent the pandemic baking desserts, Frances Hohl might not have gained 11.3 kilos.
But the magical pastry chef, also known as Casmere, her 19-year-old daughter, who was studying remotely, calmed her anxiety about the covid by baking fabulous creations almost every night: strawberry cupcakes, chocolate cookies, French macaroons and meringue tarts. of lemon. Once he even made a wedding cake. It didn’t matter that there was no wedding to celebrate.
Hohl couldn’t ignore his daughter’s efforts. Nor did he want to. “The wedding cake is my favorite,” says Hohl, 56, a writer from Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
And so it was that, after 11 months of confinement, Hohl found himself in Movara, a fitness resort in Ivins, Utah, walking through rust-colored canyons with sand so thick he practically walked wading through it. His calves ached. His shoulders ached. Blisters grew between his toes. Still, in the afternoons she took strength or cardio classes, along with massages and other body treatments, all in an effort to shed the pounds she’d accumulated.
“I was very uncomfortable in my body,” says Hohl.
Many people felt that way after a year of ordering takeout, Netflix marathons, and working from home, often facing enormous stress, anxiety and depression. According to research published in March in the JAMA Network Open, Americans gained more than a pound for every 10 days of isolation.

And the drive to drop the pandemic pounds extends beyond the United States.
Slimmeria, a UK weight loss, detox and fitness retreat operator, has sold out since May. “I think that due to the COVID situation, people are taking their health very seriously and have started to practice self-help,” says Slimmeria owner Galia Grainger.
Caroline Sylger Jones, founder of the retreat guide and review site Queen of Retreats, observe the same.
“Most of our UK and European withdrawals that we have been able to do have sold out this summer, although everyone says that reservations are last minute,” he says. “People are definitely looking to lose their running weight and get fitter.”
Now that the world is opening up, weight loss and fitness centers are reaping the benefits of those goals.
Looking to lose “the 19 of the covid”
Hilton Head Health, in South Carolina, has seen a 30% increase in new visits since mid-February, with a waiting list of six to eight weeks. Due to customer demand, The Ranch, in Malibu, California, just launched The Ranch 9.0, a nine-day experience that adds two days to its iconic week-long program. Y We Care, In Desert Hot Springs, California, he’s so busy he’s considering opening an East Coast location.
In MovaraIn Utah, tickets were sold out for 18 straight weeks.
“And there is no sign that it is going to decrease,” says Elaine Hartrick, Movara’s general manager. “Clients arrive every week talking about how they have won the” 19 or 25 or 30 of the covid. “People recognize that obesity is a risk factor for complications from covid, and they want to change their lifestyle so as not to become another Statistics. It was a wake-up call for a lot of people. “
Caren Kabot, founder of Just escapes, a travel company focused on spa and wellness, says people are also looking to rest and recuperate after a year of confinement.
“They wonder: where do I start? What do I have to do? I tell them to plan at least one week in which they can focus on creating balance in their life while shedding a few extra pounds.”

“It was very reassuring”
Tiffany Benjamin, 41, went further and booked a month-long stay at Fit Farm, in Castalian Springs, Tennessee.
“We taught three kids online and stayed indoors for a year and several months, and I just ate and drank and gained about 80 pounds,” says Benjamin, who runs a foundation for an Indianapolis company. “It didn’t feel right, it didn’t fit in my pants. I hadn’t picked up anything but a box of donuts. I thought going to a place where I wouldn’t have to pick up anyone’s socks and they would give me a schedule of what to do. it sounded really good. “
Every morning he would get up at 6 for a workout before breakfast, along with eight or ten other guests. The rest of the day consisted of five or six hours of exercises and workshops on all kinds of topics, from nutrition to 5 languages of love, along with three healthy meals and two snacks. Think summer camp for adults, but with cooking classes, interval training, and sugar-free juices.
Camaraderie is as important as fitness. At all these resorts, guests eat together and exercise as a group.
“Everyone had the same mission, regardless of their health and weight,” says Benjamin. “We were there to be kind to ourselves and to others. I watched the sunrise on the horizon. I stroked a horse. I went hiking. It was very reassuring and I didn’t have to make many decisions.”

Pandemic stress takes its toll
Stress and anxiety are two of the main reasons many people gain weight in general, and specifically during confinement, says Katie Rickel, licensed clinical psychologist and executive director of Structure House, in Durham, North Carolina.
“Stress, habit and boredom, and that describes the pandemic,” says Rickel, adding that Structure House is fully booked for three months. “All the reasons why people came to the food were emphasized. The covid also sensitized people about how delicate our health is and helped people re-prioritize how controllable health behaviors are.”
Jacob Norry, 25, came to Structure House for five weeks in November. Marine biology graduate student in Fort Lauderdale, Norry has struggled with bingeing for years. Last August he broke his ankle and his weight soared to 127 kilos … Norry fell into a deep depression.
“The covid did not help,” he says. “I live alone and not having people come home was hell.”
A family friend suggested Structure House, which offers treatment for binge eating, and Norry decided to go. He lost 9 kilos, most of which he has maintained.
“They really help rebuild your relationship with food,” he says. “When I walked into Structure House my goal was: ‘I want to be back at 79’. Now my goal is: ‘I want to be healthy.’

“We needed something different”
What brought Laura and Danielle Prioleau to Movara was health. The mother-daughter duo from Twentynine Palms, California, spent nine weeks there.
“Before the pandemic, I had lost 100 pounds and was doing very well,” says Danielle, in her early 20s, who is completing graduate school in marriage and family therapy.
“But during the pandemic I gained weight and I didn’t come out. I wanted to support my mother and make a concerted effort. We both wanted a lifestyle change and we were tired of rigid diets. Nothing was working. We needed something different.”
Danielle was able to work remotely; her mother, an auditor for a non-profit organization, took time off from work to go to Movara. “Being at home, with three children who came from the university … I did nothing but cook and play board games,” says Laura Prioleau.
Laura has lost almost 16 kilos and Danielle has lost about 14.
These vacations are not cheap. Rates for a new participant in Structure House start at US $ 3,050 for a one-week stay, and about US $ 2,500 a week for a shared one-bedroom apartment if you stay four weeks. The Ranch costs $ 8,600 for seven days and $ 10,800. At Fit Farm, the price for a double room is US $ 2,399 for a week. Movara starts at $ 1,995 per person in a shared room ($ 2,569 in a single) for a week.
But many people who can afford these types of withdrawals believe that it is worth the investment, although there is no guarantee that they will keep the weight off.
Because while most resorts offer some kind of back-to-the-world program, let’s face it: It’s easy to eat healthy when someone cooks for you, takes you on a field trip, and takes away the temptation. The challenge comes when the fairy dust settles and the real world kicks in.
But some people do. Hohl lost two kilos during his month at Movara, and his body fat percentage went from 43.7 to 39.6.
When he returned to Colorado, he followed the Movara Home program and lost another 5 kilos. (It also helped that the “pastry elf” got a full-time job, reducing his time in the kitchen.)
Hohl hopes to return to Movara next February for a refresher. “I have received a lot of comments from family members who last saw me before I left,” says Hohl. “They found that I was much happier and obviously less weight.”
