When coffee is said, each of us imagines something different. Some people have foamed cappuccino, another strong espresso and another will suffice with the classic, “very popular” in our country. Instant coffee is a daily routine of many Slovaks. Before we start the very test of different brands, let’s look at how such coffee actually came about. History of instant coffee In 1771, the first version of instant coffee was created in Britain. It was called an “instant mix.” John Dring even obtained a patent for this invention from the British government. However, David Strang of New Zealand, who patented soluble coffee powder in 1890, is considered the father of the first more successful coffee. In 1901, a Japanese chemist living in the United States, Satori Kato, invented the instant tea technology he applied to coffee. 1910 was a year in which production began in full swing. The first instant coffee factory was established by Belgian-American businessman George Constant Louis Washington. His coffee was enjoyed by American soldiers and they popularly called this drink the “cup of George”. Instant coffee production Instant coffee is prepared from roasted ground coffee in two ways: by drying and freezing or by spraying. The first step is the brewing of coffee, followed by the evaporation of a larger proportion of the water, which results in concentrated coffee, which is further processed into instant coffee. 8 products appeared in our instant coffee test. How did each type of coffee pass our editorial test? TEST Favorite nut-chocolate spreads: Which one would we not buy the second time? JACOBS Velvet Approximate price: 4.40 € per 200 g This coffee was the first in our testing and set the bar high. The distinctive taste will please lovers of strong coffee and the rich foam will last long after pouring. The pleasant scent of hazel was smelled throughout the kitchen. JACOBS Velvet GOLD CREMA Approximate price: 7.90 € per 180 g Like its colleague above, this instant coffee has a strong taste. It brings a mildly hot feeling after drinking, but not very, still there to feel the softness. The name “GOLD CREMA” is used in the name, but to our surprise the mentioned “crema” did not last very long. JACOBS KRÖNUNG Approximate price: 11,39 € for 200 g This coffee is for those who like a really strong, penetrating taste and do not tolerate soft tones. But don’t look forward to the foam, it won’t show up at all, which of course not everyone is looking for. However, the manufacturer does not mention the foam in the name, so there is nothing to blame after all. We were pleasantly surprised by her taste. She was hot and expressive. DAVIDOFF CREMA Intense Approximate price: 7.99 € for 90 g Next in line, coffee from the Davidoff brand, pleasantly surprised us. It had a very strong specific taste, more acidic in the background. The foam lasted long after it was poured. Thanks to this instant coffee, we got a completely different taste experience than with previous products. NESCAFÉ CREMA Approximate price: 6.35 € per 100 g Coffee from Nescafé was the most famous among the testers. We were pleased with its very pleasant distinctive taste with perfect foam on the surface. Don’t look for acidity here, rather a mildly hot taste with a pleasant mild nutty aroma. In our opinion, it is definitely one of the most delicious products of this test. NESCAFÉ GOLD Approximate price: 8.79 € for 200 g As my grandmother said “good old classic” and we must agree with it. It is characterized by a strong coffee taste and a less pronounced aroma. The tongue remains slightly hot after drinking. This species is not proud of Nescafé, but we didn’t mind at all. This coffee machine, known to consumers, was placed on the higher rungs of our test. NESCAFÉ GOLD BARISTA Approximate price: € 11.99 per 180 g With this coffee you can look forward to a strong taste, a strong aroma and sour tones on the tongue after drinking. The foam did not appear in this case. This disappointed us a bit with its name “Gold Barista”. CLEVER Gold Approximate price: 2.79 € per 100 g The taste of this instant coffee is not very pronounced, but rather weaker. It does not have too hot or sour undertone. As can be seen in the photo, the fine foam appeared, but did not last long after pouring. It will certainly be appreciated by those consumers who are not looking for palatable coffee. Each of the tested coffees had something in it. One tasted more to us, the other less. Some had a strong taste and a weak aroma. Others had too acidic tones and not too tempting foam. Each one of us has different taste buds and will be liked by a different species, so this is our subjective. However, if we had to choose two of the coffees that we rate as the most delicious from our test, they would be JACOBS VELVET and JACOBS VELVET Gold Crema. We also tried them with frothed milk and we felt like we were drinking real coffee from a cafe. Tip in conclusion: Remember that instant coffee does not need to be poured directly with boiling water from a kettle. The water should ideally be 83 ° C.
