“Last Warning”: US Government and Lawmakers Sound Climate Change Alarm Following UN Report

(CNN) – Lawmakers and senior climate officials in President Joe Biden’s administration sounded the alarm on Monday following a new report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) urging nations to swiftly limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“If senators really followed the science of this report, we would have 100 votes for climate action in tune with 100% certainty that man-made climate change is destroying our planet,” said Senator Ed Markey. of Massachusetts in a statement. “This report should be the last warning to the world that time has run out to save the planet from dangerous and irreversible climate change.”

The latest IPCC report concludes that the world is running out of time to keep man-made global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius. The report poses different scenarios if the nations of the world reduce their carbon emissions and collectively limit their warming to 1.5 degrees, compared to what will happen if they do not take action, leading to global warming of 2 or 3 degrees Celsius. . The latter would have catastrophic consequences for the planet, by worsening already severe weather events, such as fires and floods.

“Every small increase in warming is important, and every small increase in warming avoided is important,” Dr. Jane Lubchenco, deputy director of Climate and Environment in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told CNN. “We have to increase ambition and face the climate crisis as the existential threat that it is.”

Record temperatures in the northern hemisphere

With global warming currently at 1.1 degrees Celsius, this summer has already set new records for heat and drought in parts of the United States. Some lawmakers said they feared this summer could be the new normal, and even the best scenario going forward.

“It is not that this year that we are living is going to be a bump, but that it will be the best scenario if we do not make changes,” Democratic Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota told CNN. “Ranchers are killing their herds because they can’t find hay, part of the border waters [de Minnesota] They are closed due to the danger of fires. I think of my grandson; Will you know snow in Minnesota? “

Smith and other lawmakers said the new report underscores the need for Congressional Democrats to pass a $ 3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill that includes strong climate provisions, such as tax credits for renewable energy, and a Clean Electricity Standard.

Many lawmakers believe that passing a robust reconciliation bill is their best hope for achieving President Biden’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% relative to 2005 levels by 2030. Biden has also said he wants to get the United States to reach net zero emissions by 2050, and completely reduce emissions from the US power sector by 2035.

“The world must come together before the ability to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is out of reach,” said US climate envoy John Kerry. “What the world requires now is real action. We can get to the low-carbon economy that we urgently need, but time is not on our side.”

The UN Conference on Climate Change

Biden and lawmakers have a series of crucial steps this summer and fall. The bulk of the budget reconciliation will likely occur in September and October, on the eve of the crucial United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), in which the United States and other countries will meet to discuss commitments to reduce carbon emissions.

“All major economies must commit to cracking down on climate change during this critical decade,” Kerry said. “It is the only way to get us on a credible path to global net emissions by mid-century. This is the critical decade for action, and COP26 in Glasgow should be a turning point in this crisis.”
