Covid-19 in Tunisia: more than 500,000 people vaccinated in one day

Published on :

Tunisia administered more than half a million vaccines against Covid-19 on Saturday as part of an acceleration of its national vaccination campaign to stop the spread of the epidemic.

Tunisia, which avoided a health “disaster” a few weeks ago, has stepped up its vaccination campaign, while it has received more than 6 million doses from Western and Arab countries. More than 500,000 people were vaccinated on Saturday August 7 in order to stem the Covid-19 epidemic.

The slowness of the fight against the health crisis, and the management of it, led to a wave of protest in Tunisia against the government of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.

The latter was fired two weeks ago by President Kaïs Saïed as part of a series of emergency measures.

Five months after the launch of the vaccination campaign, 1.3 million people received the two doses of the vaccine. In order to speed up the pace, the authorities have opened appointments for people over the age of 40, causing an influx to the centers. According to data from the Ministry of Health, 551,000 people received a dose of vaccine on Saturday.

Officially, this country of 11 million inhabitants now has one of the worst death rates in the world linked to the pandemic.

With the millions of doses of vaccine that have poured in following donations in recent weeks, Tunisia officially hopes to vaccinate around 50% of its population by mid-October.
