Refusal to comply during a police check in Paris: the driver indicted and remanded in custody – Le Monde

The driver of the vehicle suspected of refusing to comply during a control, Saturday in Paris, during which the police fired, killing one of his passengers, was indicted, Thursday, June 9, and placed in detention provisional, according to a judicial source. The man, injured by a police shot in the chest, is indicted for “attempted intentional homicide of a person holding public authority, repeated aggravated refusal to comply, repeated driving of a vehicle despite an injunction to return his driving license and repeated offense of driving under the influence of an alcoholic state”. Seriously injured by police shooting in the chest, the driver was heard by the investigating judge at the hospital where he was admitted after the fact, according to the prosecution. The 38-year-old man was placed in police custody on Tuesday for refusing to comply twice during a check of his vehicle in the 18th arrondissement of Paris by officials on mountain bikes. The latter fired nine times, according to the prosecution, hit him in the chest and hit his passenger seated in the front, a young woman born in 2001 who died the next day. Asked about the driver’s state of health, his sister Sonia (first name changed) replied that he was “in bad shape, but his condition is improving”. “It’s true that my brother had problems with the law, but that does not justify the violence that has been committed,” continued Sonia to the press. “He refused to comply for fear of going to prison (…), for fear that the police would arrest him, because he did not have his license”. “His criminal record does not legitimize the nine bullets fired,” insisted the young woman. The police custody of the three police officers who used their weapon – two men aged 23 and 32 and a woman aged 31 – was lifted on Tuesday after 48 hours for “continuation of investigations” within the framework judicial information opened on the same day. They are not indicted at this stage. Several associations called for a rally on Saturday in Paris to demand the repeal of article L435-1 of the internal security code which regulates the use of firearms by the police. The World with AFP
