Updated 18:04 8. 6. 2022, 16:30 Minister of Finance Igor Matovič (OĽaNO) criticized the Minister of Education Branislav Gröhling (SaS) for vetoing an increase in teachers’ salaries and an increase in taxes at a government meeting on Wednesday (June 8). Matovic declared that “something happened today that the civilized world has not experienced.” He pointed out that, according to him, the Minister of Education did not want to increase teachers’ salaries, thus “writing in world history”. He specified that “tax surpluses” in 2022 are expected to amount to 327 million euros, “budget surpluses” are worth 1.648 billion euros. “And this is not yet an item in the expenditure on increasing teachers ‘salaries,” Matovič said in connection with the statements that an increase in teachers’ salaries is possible only from unused tax surpluses without tax increases. According to him, it is not true that SaS did not have a proposal to increase taxes. “She had it since March 27,” Matovic said. He also announced that he would submit his proposal to increase taxes “for every single government” until it was approved. “We will fight for higher salaries for public employees,” the finance minister added. The Minister of Education stated that he would discuss salaries in education with the Prime Minister or the Minister of Finance this or the following week. “This topic is not closed yet,” he said. At the same time, he stated that the following days they would sit down at a table and explain some things. He expects them to agree on something.
According to him, the bill, which was to be submitted to the government by the Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic Igor Matovič, has not yet been seen. He therefore could not comment on it.
