Updated 14:40 8. 6. 2022, 11:32 Morning disaster in the center of Berlin. In the square near the Memorial Church of Emperor William I, a car crashed into a crowd. One person died at the scene and firefighters confirmed eight injured. Initial information spoke of 30 injured, writes CNN. The driver of the vehicle, which ended up in the shop window, was detained. German police have confirmed that the driver of the car was a 29-year-old man of German-Armenian descent living in the German capital. It is still unclear whether the accident was probably caused by a medical condition or an intentional act. The detained man, who drove a Renault Clio silver passenger car, first stepped on the curb near the busy Kurfürstendamm shopping boulevard on the corner of Tauentzienstrasse and Rankestrasse, where he crashed into a group of people who were mostly teenagers. After about 200 meters of driving, he went back to the curb on Marburger Strasse, where he finally ended up in a perfumery shop. Berlin mayor Franziska Giffey said on Twitter that she was extremely concerned and shocked by the incident. “We will do everything we can to help those affected,” she promised. She also stressed that she would investigate the act. This information has not yet been officially confirmed, with around 130 police officers on the scene, and the same square became the site of a terrorist attack in 2016.
