OĽaNO chairman Igor Matovič failed with his new idea to combine teacher pay increases with higher taxes. He was vetoed by the SaS at a government meeting, and the decision was accepted by the remaining coalition parties. Since Tuesday, after Matovič’s sharp attacks on the SaS and especially Richard Sulík, the coalition has operated without a basic platform that has decided on most important government steps or draft laws – the SaS has decided not to go to coalition councils. These were held for two years, mostly on Mondays. According to the coalition agreement, all proposals that are not in the government’s program statement, but also parliamentary proposals, must be discussed and approved by the coalition council. Theoretically, this could block government and parliamentary decisions, but in reality it probably won’t. The new conflict came after Matovic’s parliament, without the support of the SaS, passed a package with higher family allowances, a tax bonus and a ring fee of 1.3 billion a year – which the president vetoed. Is there or is there no money for teachers’ salaries? This time, they have a dispute in the coalition over where to find money for higher teachers’ salaries. Igor Matovic wants to increase taxes on alcohol, gambling, Russian oil and rich companies. SaS resolutely rejects the increase in these taxes, arguing that money for teachers’ salaries can be found in over-tax collection due to inflation. On Wednesday, Finance Minister Matovic explained that by the end of the year we should have an overpayment of 327 million euros and that this money will no longer go to higher salaries for teachers. According to Matovič, the government also spends significantly more than this amount compared to the budget – budget surpluses will amount to 1.648 billion by the end of the year, said the chairman OĽaNO. For example, the money goes to higher child allowances, to help Ukraine or for energy in hospitals and schools. “I will submit this proposal to every single government, because the conscience of the SaS must break,” Matovic said.
