(Photo: BERNETTI/AFP via Getty Images) Chilean President Gabriel Boric said Monday that the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from this year’s Summit of the Americas “was a mistake.” The Chilean president made the remarks at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during his visit to Ottawa, before traveling to Los Angeles. “No one is going to save themselves. We have to unite to have better development of our nations. We feel entitled to express, here in the United States or wherever, that exclusion is not the way. That has not given results historically. And when the US tries to exclude certain countries, what it ultimately does is reinforce the position they have in their own places. We believe that this is a mistake, and we are going to say so at the summit,” Boric added. Of course, he adds that his government will not stop raising its voice to defend human rights, condemn political imprisonment or express concern about the migratory crisis. “This goes beyond the United States, because it is the summit of all the countries of America. It cannot be that in our American continent, the only thing that is talked about outside is about our disagreements with two or three countries”, he expressed. “We have many more issues in common, such as what we have presented today with Justin Trudeau, and when we talk about human rights, we are going to do it seriously, without seeing who is the president who violates them,” Boric concluded.
