The two Alpine F1 single-seaters will start the Monaco Grand Prix tomorrow in the top 10. Fernando Alonso qualified in seventh position and Esteban Ocon in tenth position during an exciting Saturday afternoon on the Rock. The two men were unsuccessful and could have started even higher on the starting grid, but Fernando was unable to complete a second lap in Q3 after hitting the wall at turn 7, while Esteban did not record a significant lap on new tires due to a red flag which ended the session prematurely. Despite a brief red flag in Q1, both drivers made it through to Q2, with Esteban improving his first lap to 1m12.848s, while Fernando’s first attempt, which saw him complete a lap in 1 ’13”394, allowed the Spaniard to enter the second phase of qualifying without fear. In Q2, Fernando, with a set of new tyres, moved closer to the top 6 thanks to a time of 1’12”721. With worn tyres, Esteban managed a time of 1’13”055, also hoisting him into the top 10. The two drivers then put on soft tires for their second attempt. Esteban leapt up the order with a lap of 1m12.528s to sixth place, with Fernando joining him in Q3 with a lap of 1m12.688s. Having used new tires in Q1, Esteban only had one set of softs left for Q3, while Fernando still had two available. After his first flying lap, Fernando finished fifth in 1:12.247. Esteban, credited with a 1’13”047 with his used tires, was tenth. Alas, they were unable to embark on a second attempt, the session being interrupted prematurely by a waved red flag following Sergio Pérez’s accident at turn 8. “After three complex free practice sessions where the performance failed us, it’s a great feeling to be able to invite us to Q3 in Monaco. We knew qualifying was key, and our focus was on finding the right set-up after testing different things yesterday and today. However, I have mixed feelings, as I was about to put in an excellent last lap before this incident interrupted the session. Nevertheless, we showed that the rhythm was there, and we managed to extract it at the right moment thanks to the good work of the team. We will have both cars in the top 10 tomorrow and as rain is expected, it promises to be interesting as we know that anything can happen. At the same time, Fernando went out slightly at Mirabeau, but fortunately the damage was minimal on his A522. “Even though we made a big step forward with the car today and our qualifying is good if we stick to our grid position, we could have been placed even better. On my first attempt in Q3, I moved up to fifth. And given the evolution of the track, I think we could have maintained this position. Unfortunately, I locked the wheels under braking at Mirabeau. In Monaco, when you lose your concentration, even if it’s only for a fraction of a second, it can have big consequences. So I apologize to the team. Nevertheless, we will see what awaits us tomorrow. Especially since if the rain comes to the party, it could be very chaotic, with several safety cars and red flags. If it rains, I’m sure it will be great to watch on TV, but very stressful inside the car! » Otmar Szafnauer, Team Principal concludes this positive day despite this accident at the end of the course. “We are happy to put our two cars in the top 10 today. Especially since we were able to make good progress compared to yesterday during the free practice session this afternoon and during this important qualifying session. We had the potential to be even higher on the grid than the seventh and tenth places we are, but unfortunately we were unable to complete the laps in Q3, which was completed earlier than expected due to a red flag. It happens, and we’ll see what we could possibly have done to make sure we maximized our potential in Q3 in the races to come. Fernando also came out slightly, causing some damage to his car. But they are minor, especially compared to the big crashes that can happen in Monaco, so this one will be repaired and ready for tomorrow’s race. There are some uncertainties regarding the weather forecast, we will keep an eye out. But rain or dry, we put ourselves in a strong position to get a good result with our two cars. »
