(CNN Spanish) — The bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa and apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Estelí, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez Lagos, denounced this Thursday that police officers persecuted him during the day and night, according to what he said “by superior orders”, even going so far as to enter the private sphere of his father’s house. “Today I have been persecuted by the Sandinista police from morning to this time of night, at all times, during all my movements of the day. At the end of the afternoon, finding myself at my niece’s house, I went directly to ask the officers Why do they persecute me? I have been informed that they obey orders,” said the bishop in a video that was released on the social networks of his diocese and the Archdiocese of Managua. Álvarez regrets the measure because he had already asked the agents to leave. “They entered my circle of family privacy, they came to my house, private, paternal, maternal, putting the safety of my family at risk,” he added. Álvarez said that he took refuge in a parish in the Las Colinas neighborhood from where he stated that he will begin a fast based on water and serum, indefinitely until the authorities respect his rights. “Today at this time I begin an indefinite water and serum fast, until the Police, through the president of the Episcopal conference or the vice president of the Episcopal conference, let me know that they are going to respect my family privacy circle”, Alvarez said. The National Police has not officially informed if it executes a security plan with bishops and priests. CNN has consulted the Police, through a public relations officer, but so far they have not responded to our calls. Through his social networks, the auxiliary bishop of Managua, Monsignor Silvio Báez, expressed this Thursday: “I offer my solidarity and my fraternal closeness to my brother, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, who is being harassed by the Police. I join in his prayer, asking the Lord to protect him and grant him the strength of his Spirit.” Álvarez’s complaint comes after two priests, one from Masaya and the other from Sébaco, denounced the permanent police presence outside their temples. The Police have not provided any official information in this regard. Álvarez has been critical of the government’s actions since 2018 when the protests against the government began, after the announcement of a pension system reform project, which, although it was later withdrawn, opened the way to broad protests demanding changes in the democratic system. The government has blamed the bishops, without evidence, for supporting what it considers to be a failed coup attempt.
