Dannie has a new motherboard that integrates Chinese processors. The new MBX-Z60A motherboard could be a suitable alternative to conventional computers. Its advantage is standard connectivity, but especially the integrated x86-based processor. It is fully compatible with standard software used in our country, including Windows. However, the disadvantage is the relatively low performance, which cannot be compared to the world’s best. This is more of a solution for less demanding deployments than office work. One way Russia can eliminate the effects of the failures of modern Intel and AMD processors is to use Chinese Zhaoxin processors, which share an x86 instruction set with US chips. Dannie has developed a new motherboard that can be used in government, commercial and domestic. Tom’s Hardware deals with the topic. Shortly after the outbreak of the military conflict in Ukraine, leading companies cut off trade with the aggressive country. Even modern processors from Intel and AMD, which have been and continue to be widely used in the private and state areas, have not officially flowed into Russia for several weeks now. Both companies develop processors with the x86 instruction set, which is closely linked to the Windows software platform. Therefore, switching to another alternative is not easy. Although the Russians have been developing their own processors for years, even these cannot yet be considered a full-fledged replacement. It causes … Home replacement does not exist Baikal chips have a problem with their dependence on architecture and licenses from the British company ARM. However, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland recently extended the sanctions list to another 63 Russian companies, including Baikal Electronics and MCST. Although the latter institution develops Elbrus processors based on its own architecture, their compatibility with common software is debatable. The biggest obstacle for Russia, however, is the production of processors, which has so far taken place in Taiwan. However, due to restrictions on international trade, Moscow has already lost this opportunity. It is also a fact that the country does not have its own advanced technologies for their production and will not do so in the foreseeable future. At the same time, there has been speculation about possible cooperation with China, but this is a relatively controversial topic. The world’s most populous country, with its direct assistance to Russia, would run the risk of being sanctioned. At the same time, China’s chip production capacity is limited and probably allocated in advance by other customers. However, trade between the two countries is still ongoing and this also applies to the commercial sphere. Dannie, a motherboard company, operates directly in the markets of Turkey, Lithuania, China and, finally, Russia. This draws attention to its new product – the MBX-Z60A motherboard. Hardware like the West The Russian website habr.com states that the Micro-ATX board offers two slots for DDR4 memory, a duo of PCIe x16 slots, one M.2-2280 for SSD and M.2.-2230 for Wi-Fi adapter / Bluetooth or three SATA ports. DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA video outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, 3.5mm audio input / output and PS / 2 port are also available. It is therefore standard equipment suitable for areas where older peripherals are also present. MBX-Z60A motherboard from Dannie. Source: habr.com But the most interesting part of the parameters is the integrated processor Zhaoxin KaiXian KX-6640MA with four x86 cores at 2.1 to 2.7 GHz. It is a so-called SoC (System-on-Chip), so it also offers PCIe lines, SATA and USB 3.0 controller, as well as graphics. The chip is economical, while its TDP does not exceed 25 watts. In China, Lenovo also uses Zhaoxin chips for some of its compact and less powerful products for the local market. However, these processors are slowly moving on. The MBX-Z60A motherboard is not the first product based on Zhaoxin chips, which are also aimed at markets outside the home China. So far, processors have already appeared in some home storage devices (NAS) from Qnap. We also address the topic of the war in Ukraine in the current issue of the special SHARE podcast: The most important thing is compatibility. However, the advantage of Zhaoxin chips is their compatibility with the x86 instruction set, ie also commonly used software, including the Windows operating system. Shanghai Zhaoxin Semiconductor was formed by the merger of the Chinese government with the originally Taiwanese company Via Technologies. And it is the third and final company licensed for the x86 instruction set after Inteli and AMD. Therefore, the novelty from Dannie cannot be taken as a full-fledged replacement for the supply outages of modern chips from the West in Russia, but rather a certain possibility of eliminating their effects. The KaiXian KX-6640MA is not even the latest and most powerful processor from Zhaoxin. Later, the fact that Zhaoxin also currently manufactures its processors in Taiwan’s TSMC may prove to be a problem, but a later transfer of production to the home SMIC is not excluded either. Computers built on this platform can thus be used, for example, in a simple deployment, ie in office applications. It is not a solution for computationally intensive operations and not supercomputers at all. Let us add that another way Russia can get to the banned technologies is through gray imports, which the local government should have already legalized.
