The first cases are reported by health professionals from Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Britain, Canada and the USA. It is a disease that does not usually occur in such countries. Can the disease spread like a covid and what is the risk of causing major problems in Slovakia? There is no rare disease in Slovakia yet. We also do not record cases of suspected smallpox. “Neither Slovakia nor Europe is an endemic (note, ed. Permanently present) area of smallpox. We have not recorded any cases of the disease in the territory of the Slovak Republic, “said Júlia Adamčíková, Head of the Infectious Diseases Surveillance Department of the Public Health Office. Smallpox is a viral disease. They first appeared in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a village where monkeys were often consumed. “Transmission to humans occurs through contact with an infected animal or human or objects contaminated with biological material containing the smallpox virus,” the expert said. At the same time, he adds that the virus can also appear in our country. “However, in times of wide travel possibilities and due to the current occurrence of the disease outside the hitherto known endemic areas, it cannot be ruled out that an imported case of the disease could be recorded,” warns Adamčíková. However, large-scale epidemics are not expected. The symptoms are similar to the flu and smallpox. Fever, fatigue, muscle pain, chills – the symptoms are initially similar to the flu. Swelling of the lymph nodes follows, sowing is added later. It starts on the face and gradually spreads to other parts of the body, including the palms, legs and genitals. The spill begins with red spots, which turn into pimples, which are later filled with a clear to purulent liquid and then a scab is formed. After dropping the scab, the person is non-infectious. The clinical signs of the disease are similar to those of varicella. “The difference is in the development of skin lesions. Skin lesions generally appear at the same stage, which is a hallmark of smallpox and smallpox. Sheep pox lesions appear gradually, so at one time the body has rashes at different stages, ”explains Júlia Adamčíková. According to the expert, a longer and more intensive contact with the infected person is necessary for the disease to spread in humans. The incubation time is usually six to 16, it can be up to 21 days. The first case was reported by England in early May. There is already talk of a small outbreak of smallpox in Europe. The first case appeared in the UK earlier this month. Since then, seven cases have been registered in the country. Spain has another seven cases and 22 suspects, nine cases are reported by Portugal, and one is reported in Sweden and Italy. They already have the first patient with this diagnosis in the United States. Canada has also reported two confirmed cases. Experts fear that the virus may be spreading on a larger scale, especially through sexual contact. University of Reading microbiologist Simon Clarke told the Daily Mail that he suspected that the number of cases in England was already tens. But he insisted that the disease would not spread like a covid.
