The North Atlantic Council, NATO’s main political decision-making body, could not decide to start the accession process due to Ankara’s disapproval. Turkey blocked the start of Finland and Sweden’s accession negotiations with the North Atlantic Alliance on Wednesday. TASR reports on the basis of a DPA report that refers to NATO resources. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Wednesday that Finland and Sweden had officially submitted their applications for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Ankara could not agree to NATO’s proposed enlargement, saying it would jeopardize the Alliance’s security. Erdogan accuses Stockholm and Helsinki of providing refuge to members of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.
