Russia suspended electricity supplies to Finland on Saturday night after its energy company RAO Nordic threatened to cut off supplies due to arrears, a representative of the Finnish network operator told AFP on Saturday. Deliveries “are zero since midnight,” said Timo Kaukonen. RAO Nordic announced on Friday that it would suspend deliveries due to payment problems. “We are forced to suspend electricity imports from May 14,” said a subsidiary of the Russian state energy holding company Inter RAO. She cited the inability to pay for electricity supplied from Russia as a reason. The electricity shortage will be compensated by imports of more electricity from Sweden. “The shortage of electricity imports from Russia will be offset by the import of more electricity from Sweden and the production of more electricity in Finland,” said Fingrid Reima Päivinen, vice president of energy systems operations. Finland is preparing to announce its application for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) following the Moscow invasion of Ukraine, AFP recalls.
