Ukraine, USA: “Dolphins trained to protect Russia’s fleet in the Black Sea”

To defend the Black Sea fleet, Russia also uses trained dolphins. This was stated by the United States Naval Institute (Usni), based on satellite images that identify two dolphin enclosures positioned at the entrance to the port of Sevastopol at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sevastopol, Crimea, is the main Russian naval base in the Black Sea. Ships in the military port are out of range of Ukrainian missiles, but remain vulnerable to underwater attacks. And the dolphins are trained by the Russians, but also by the Americans, to combat attacks by divers. In 2019, a beluga dolphin wearing a harness with the Russian inscription “St Petersburg equipment” was found off the Norwegian coast. Later renamed Hvaldimir, or Vladimir’s (Putin’s) whale in Norwegian, the cetacean was clearly domesticated by man and speculated on its possible training by the Russian military forces.
