Last Sunday, more than 35 million French people voted for the second round of the presidential election in which Emmanuel Macron emerged victorious against Marine le Pen. A ballot that obeys very strict rules to guarantee its regularity. In this matter, it is the Constitutional Council which polices thanks to delegated magistrates who travel to each polling station to check that all is well. Obviously, there are sometimes hiccups and this generally results in the cancellation of the votes in the office concerned. 20 Minutes has compiled the most unusual shortcomings. Of the 35,096,478 ballots cast in the ballot boxes on Sunday by French voters, the Constitutional Council canceled 20,594 in 40 municipalities according to a count made by 20 Minutes. A cancellation percentage of 0.06% which had no influence on the result of the ballot. The most talked about case concerns the office of Lourdios-Ichère, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, where Jean Lassalle, unsuccessful candidate in the 1st round, “publicly staged, in the polling station, his abstention”, according to the constitutionnal Council. But there are more surprising cases. In nomine scrutinA Cinzancourt, in the Somme, the town hall had installed the polling station in the village church. To slip their ballot into the envelope, voters had to go through the confessional which served as a voting booth. “The conduct of the ballot in this place of worship being likely to undermine the freedom and sincerity of the ballot”, the 25 votes cast were canceled. Lazy to stay The village of Guinecourt, in Pas-de-Calais, only had 15 registrants. At midday, 13 of them had already done their civic duty and the president of the polling station took the decision to pack up at 1 p.m. without worrying about the two voters who were missing, or the procedure. . “The ballot cannot be closed before 7 p.m.,” recalled the magistrate of the Constitutional Council who had found the door closed. Same observation in Glux-en-Glenne, in Nièvre, where the only office was closed at 6 p.m. , the polling station teams had been zealous, providing voters with three different ballots when there were only two candidates. Indeed, in addition to the Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen ballots, white ballots were offered. An “irregularity likely to influence the voters” which resulted in the cancellation of the votes. Secret passage In Saint-Lon-les-Mines, in the Landes, the delegate magistrate of the Constitutional Council made a curious discovery while inspecting the ballot box . He observed that “it was possible to introduce ballot papers into the ballot box through an opening other than that provided for this purpose”. Impossible to know if there was fraud so, in doubt, the 708 votes cast were canceled. d’Armor, Montigny-sur-Loing and Meilleray, in Seine-et-Marne, the offices had simply been deserted. When the magistrate of the Constitutional Council came to make his inspection, “no member of the office was present” and the ballot boxes were therefore left unattended.
