This decision is not a surprise: on Sunday, when depositing his ballot in the ballot box in his polling station, Jean Lassalle had declared in front of the cameras that he was ultimately not going to vote “for the first time in his man’s life”. The Constitutional Council therefore noted that the candidate defeated in the first round had “publicly staged his abstention” and “spoke up to express his refusal to participate in the election”. A gesture that contravenes the Electoral Code since it prohibits “the dissemination of messages of an electoral propaganda nature the day before and on election day”. In addition, according to the press release from the Constitutional Council, Jean Lassalle by his attitude “undermined the respect due to the dignity of the electoral operations in which he participated in his capacity as a candidate in the first round”.
