Russian players would be banned from taking part in Wimbledon

According to the New York Times and the Sportico site, the organizers of Wimbledon will decide to exclude players of Russian and Belarusian nationality from their next tournament (June 27-July 10). This would be a consequence of the invasion of Ukraine, led since February 24, by Russia, to which Belarus is allied. This decision would deprive several very high ranked players at the ATP and the WTA from taking part in the prestigious London meeting: the Russians Daniil Medvedev, world No. 2, Andrey Rublev, who occupies him, the eighth rank or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, ranked 15th in the WTA, as well as Belarusians Aryna Sabalenka (world No. 4) and Victoria Azarenka (No. 18). Russians and Belarusians on the circuit under neutral flag Earlier in April, the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which organizes Wimbledon, said it was in talks with the British government about the participation or not of Russian and Belarusian players . After the invasion of Ukraine, the latter had not been sanctioned by the tennis authorities. They are authorized to play tournaments, but under a neutral flag. Russia and Belarus, on the other hand, are banned from team competitions.
