Mexico and the United States qualify for the final of the Gold Cup

(Reuters) – Soccer teams from Mexico and the United States will meet in the final of the Gold Cup after eliminating their counterparts from Canada and Qatar, respectively, on Thursday.

The “Tri” beat the Canadians 2-1 with a last-minute goal, while the local United States beat Qatar 1-0, which participated as a guest in the Concacaf tournament.

In a match played at the NRG stadium in Houston, Mexico scored the first goal at the end of the first half with a penalty kick that Orbelín Pineda scored with a placed shot that entered the left post, after the referee signaled the maximum penalty after reviewing the play where two Canadian defenders knocked down Rogelio Funes Mori inside the area.

Canada tied in the 57th minute when Tajon Buchanan finished with a placed shot inside the box after escaping on speed after receiving a long pass.

Jamaican referee Daneon Parchment scored a penalty for Mexico in the 65th minute after reviewing a play in the VAR, but goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau stopped Carlos Salcedo’s shot.

Mexico achieved the agonizing victory in the 99th minute with a powerful shot from Héctor Herrera inside the area after a center sent by Rodolfo Pizarro from the left sector.

Earlier, in a match played at the Q2 stadium in Texas, the United States beat Qatar, the Asian champion team, 1-0.

Qatar had the clear first option to take the lead in the 61st minute via the penalty kick, but Hassan Al Haydos sent his shot over the goal.

The United States scored the winning goal in the 86th minute when Gyasi Zardes swept into the area to finish off a pass from Nicholas Gioacchini.

In this way, Mexico and the United States will compete for the Concacaf trophy on Sunday at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
