Covid-19: more than half of adults in the EU are fully vaccinated

The European Union, which aims to vaccinate 70% of its adult population this summer, announced Thursday, July 22, that more than half of this goal had been reached. “So far there have been 200 million people who are fully vaccinated in the European Union,” European Commission spokesperson Dana Spinant told a press briefing.

A figure which corresponds to “a percentage of 54.7% of adults” completely vaccinated, having received the two doses of vaccine necessary or only one in the case of that of Johnson & Johnson.

“We have 68.4% of adults in the EU who have already had their first dose,” continued the spokesperson, who welcomed the “very tangible progress”.

“We are now among the regions of the world that have vaccinated the most. But it is important that this progress is distributed in a more balanced way so that there are no islands where the virus can spread and mutate,” said she added.

According to official data compiled by AFP, just over 440 million doses of vaccines have been administered in the European Union. That’s 98.4 doses per 100 inhabitants, while the United States is at 102.4 per 100 inhabitants.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on July 10 that the EU had enough doses to vaccinate “at least 70% of the adult population this month”.
