Journalist in Cuba denounces that his house has been under siege since July 11

(CNN Spanish) – The journalist María Matienzo Puerto denounced that her house in the center of Havana has been under siege since July 11, the day of the historic protests against the government in Cuba.

Matienzo published on Saturday an image on your Twitter account, in which subjects are seen stationed in front of his house and a motorcycle on the other side. Along with the photo, she denounced that, until then, she had been under siege for six days and that, according to a friend, there were “very strange people” around her house.

When talking to his friend, he told him that by “strange people” he was referring to men with backpacks who spent hours sitting guarding his door.

The journalist told CNN that the situation continued until Monday by whom she identifies as people dressed as civilians informing police.

“Although they are dressed in civilian clothes, because they are not from the neighborhood, they spend hours looking at our house. If we go out, they immediately pick up the phone. They are sitting near their motorcycle and next to uniformed policemen,” he said. Matienzo says that she has not been able to go out to document videos and photos since she has been detained on previous occasions and does not want to risk going out or having other acquaintances approach.

Matienzo identifies herself as an independent journalist and contributor to various information sites such as CubaNet. She said she lives with her partner, whom she describes as a psychologist known for being an activist in anti-government movements. By the nature of these jobs, she says she is sure that they are there for them and that they have already been arrested in the past for disagreeing with the government.

“The situation is like this 24 hours a day. There have been up to 14 people outside, between women and men,” he added.

The journalist regretted the situation of repression against opponents. “This time the arrest may even occur without us leaving because they are taking people from inside their house.”

CNN requested this Monday the reaction of the press office of the Cuban embassy in the United States, without having obtained a response. The CNN team in Cuba has not been able to identify an official as a spokesperson for the government security forces.
